Story Map

Today in class we started a project that will be due on Tuesday the day after labor day, it is relating to the "two kinds" story we have been reading in class and finished on Wednesday. I think the project will help us connect to the story better by sharing personal connections with it. we are answering six comparable event questions and connecting them with a picture, and map. I feel we then can interpret the story better and maybe even feel what she felt. The project website and map are cool and a fun idea and the questions are good relating to the story.

Two Kinds by Amy Tan

Today in class, we read half an excerpt from the book Joy Luck Club. Between every paragraph, we discussed a question related to that part of the story, and then took turns reading it together. The story was about a girl born in America (Chinese american), and her mother who had immigrated to the United States (Chinese immigrant). The mother had high expectations for her daughter to be the "best", and the daughter who is unable to meet these high expectations is eventually broken down. The daughter then decides she wants to be her own person and not who her mother wants her to be. She begins to not care what her mother says and just lets her "bellow" without care. Eventually, the mother begins to care less before she sees a girl on TV who looks like her daughter playing the piano.  The mother creates a schedule for her daughter to learn the piano, we left off with the mother and daughter in a fight the mother calling her "ungrateful". I thought the story ...

Vocab #1

Today in class, we wrote, read, and found images to represent the definitions of 15 words in the text "Two Kinds." The definitions were already given to us, and our assignment was to find a photo from the Internet and connect it to the meaning given to us. I liked how we did the vocabulary words because the definitions made sense and were easy to memorize. I liked that we had to write more than the definition because I feel it gave me a better understanding of the word, and that we got the words a week in advance to the quiz making there a lot of time to study.

"I`m Nobody" Presentations.

Today in class we presented our 'I`m Nobody" presentations, every group had a different theme for the PowerPoint which our groups worked on Wednesday. My theme was "Voice and Tone Specialist". I did the first slide and helped with the group collaboration slide. Through other groups and my group, I learned more about the meaning of Emily Dickinson's poem. The being of individuality and self-identity. She expressed that it is better to be a "nobody" than a "somebody", meaning it is better to be yourself and unknown than be fake to yourself and be somebody you are not. I really enjoyed the theme of this poem and agree with it. I am very bad at presentations and speaking in front of groups so I did not enjoy presenting.

I`m Nobody! Who are you? Emily Dickinson

Today in class we read the poem "`m Nobody! Who are you?" as a class, discussing each line with the class and having group discussions about it. Then we split into groups of 3-4 and began working on the group project discussing the poem's themes.  Each person gets a separate slide and one slide for us all to do together. My slide dealt with the central theme of self-identity, how you should never hide your personality to convert to societal expectations, and that being different is good.  I enjoyed this lesson and the poem we read and what it meant, however, I prefer to work alone because it helps me have a better understanding of the assignment, but I did like my group. At the end of class, we shared our cultural identity masks, it was cool to see how different everyone was, all the colors and different representations of cultures.

NewsEla- Study: Asians expected to become largest U.S. immigrant group

Today we read, annotated,  checked our understanding, wrote 2 writing prompts, and did a short quiz on a NewsEla artical called, Study: Asians Expected to Become Largest U.S. Immigrant Group. The artical discussed the immigrant patterns in the United States, mostly with Hispanics and Asians communities. Comparing the percent of the immigrant population in the United States. Also talking about the American's view on it, taking Americans' opinions into percentages as well. I learned what percent of the United States is made up of immagrants, the main two groups that are immigrating into the United States, and how this might change in the future. I enjoyed the News ELA article, it asked good questions. Although I prefer discussions with the class but for when you are not here I feel like this was a good assignment, it is set up to were you have to pay attention.

"I, Too" by Langston Hughes

Today we read the Poem "I, Too" by Langston Hughes and answered 6 writing response questions, reviewing each one with the class to compare different answers and hearing different views on the poem. I learned about how poems can mean different things to different people based on how they interpret the poem. Exploring the themes of segregation, what America represents and who it represents, and the mixing pot of cultures we have in the United States. I enjoyed the lesson and how we did it as a class instead of on our own. I feel with poems it is important to do this because they could have so many meanings. I also like it when we discuss it as a class because I am an auditory and visual learner and understand it more when we discuss it as a class.
